Advancing Women’s Oral Health Through Research, Education, and Advocacy

I’m Dr Janine Doughty. Dentist, researcher, and founder of The Feminist Dentist. My work sits at the intersection of oral health, women’s health, and healthcare systems.

Women’s oral health has long been overlooked within healthcare, despite its profound connection to wellbeing, identity, hormones, access, and quality of life.

I work with universities, healthcare organisations, educators, and policy groups to develop research, education, and conversations that bring these issues into clearer focus; with methodological rigour, lived experience, and systems-level understanding at the centre.

Research. Education. Thought leadership.
Grounded in evidence. Designed for impact.

Bridging Clinical Practice, Research, and Women’s Lived Experience

I’m Dr Janine Doughty. Dentist, Researcher, Educator, and advocate working at the intersection of oral health, women’s health, and healthcare systems.

My work focuses on the aspects of oral health that have historically received less attention: hormonal change across the life course, stigma, intimacy, inclusion health, fragmented systems, and the complex realities women navigate when seeking care.

These experiences are often treated as niche or peripheral within healthcare. I believe they are fundamental to understanding women’s health properly.

Why This Work Matters

Women’s oral health remains under-researched, under-integrated, and frequently misunderstood.

Many experiences still fall outside traditional clinical frameworks:

  • symptoms that feel difficult to explain

  • healthcare journeys shaped by stigma or fragmentation

  • oral health changes linked to hormones or wider health conditions

  • barriers created by systems rather than individuals

These are not peripheral issues. They are central to understanding why gaps in care persist, and how they can be addressed.
